In a powerful and emotional moment on the 16th of September, 2025, the community of Kup Station witnessed history. For the very first time, the bright red, black, and gold flag of Papua New Guinea was raised high in their honor, marking a poignant milestone in the nation’s 50th Golden Jubilee celebrations.
This historic event was made possible by the unwavering commitment of Kerowagi Member of Parliament, Hon. Francis Kikin Siune, MP. In a unique and symbolic tour of his district, he brought the Independence celebrations directly to the people. The festivities resonated across various locations, including Nogar, Biwol, Kerowagi Urban, and, most significantly, Kup Station.
For the people of Kup LLG, this was more than just a ceremony; it was a long-awaited recognition. “This was the first time a Member of Parliament has acknowledged us and given us this great opportunity,” shared one emotional resident. The honor of raising the flag on behalf of the entire district was a moment of immense pride, washing away years of feeling overlooked.
Hon. Siune explained the deep significance of choosing Kup Station. “I decided to raise the flag in Kup Station because it was the location during the colonial days where Kerowagi District was recognised as a government station,” he stated. He also acknowledged a difficult truth, revealing that “in the history of Kerowagi District, no MP has ever entered Kup LLG because of its hostility.” He later committed a K120, 000.00 towards their celebrations. This brave act of inclusion symbolized a new chapter of unity and healing.
The MP’s vision for the future was clear and passionate. “50 years is our matured age. We must not be still breast feeding,” he declared, urging his people to embrace progress. “I have big dreams for Kerowagi District, but I need the cooperation of all you citizens.”
This sentiment was echoed by a former leader, Mr. Guma Wau, who offered wise counsel. “We need to go to church since it is the only way our attitudes can change,” he said, supporting the current leadership. He commended Hon. Siune, calling him a “vibrant and fair leader” and praising his small, dedicated team for their work in running the district. The raising of the flag in Kup was more than a ritual; it was a powerful act of reconciliation and hope, proving that even the deepest divisions can be healed as the nation celebrates its golden age.
