KEROWAGI CULTURAL SHOW ENTERS DIGITAL ERA TO PRESERVE HERITAGE AND BOOST ECONOMY

The Kerowagi Cultural Show has taken a bold step into the digital age with the official launch of its website (www.kerowagishow.com) on 30 April 2025. Local MP Hon. Francis Kikin presided over the launch event, joined by representatives from the National Cultural Commission and Investment Promotion Authority, marking a new chapter in preserving the district’s cultural heritage through technology.

The comprehensive website serves as a central platform for all information related to the annual cultural showcase, including detailed event schedules, registration processes for participants, stunning photo galleries of past events, and valuable sponsorship opportunities. This digital initiative promises to significantly enhance the visibility of Kerowagi’s unique traditions while creating new economic pathways for local artisans, farmers, and small business owners.

Hon. Kikin emphasized the dual benefits of the project, stating, “This innovative platform perfectly marries our cherished traditions with modern technology, ensuring our culture remains vibrant while opening doors to economic growth.” The website’s launch comes at a crucial time when digital preservation of cultural practices is becoming increasingly important for future generations.

KDDA advisor Gibson Siune highlighted the global potential of the initiative, noting, “For the first time, our traditional bilums, intricate carvings, and vibrant performances can be shared with audiences worldwide – this fundamentally changes how we promote Kerowagi’s culture.”

The digital platform is expected to deliver multiple benefits to the community, from increased tourism revenue for local vendors and hospitality providers to new employment opportunities in tourism-related services. Beyond economic advantages, the website will serve as a permanent digital archive of Kerowagi’s dances, rituals, and oral traditions, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

Looking ahead, organizers are developing plans to introduce live-streamed cultural performances and immersive virtual tours, further expanding the show’s reach to international audiences. This digital transformation positions Kerowagi as a pioneering example of how Papua New Guinea’s cultural festivals can harness technology for sustainable development and global cultural exchange.
